Well, it has been a year since our last post and a lot has happened. Our sorrow over the loss of Louie, our first Catahoula has abated partially due to the nonstop antics of his little brother Sage who has also refined his keyboard skills and is now ready to put his mark on the Catahoulagans blog.

So Here goes . . .

My sweet parents picked me up from Courtney’s cool ranch near Bozeman, Montana where I was born. It was September 2024 and I was just eight-weeks old. I spent my first evening in the arms of my new parents on Main Street in downtown Bozeman wandering into stores, bars, wherever, encouraging strangers to pet me, the “cute little puppy”. According to my new parents, I was getting acclimated to my future life as an urbanite. While I missed my ten siblings, there was something warm and kooky about my new parents. As I later learned, they have Catahoula in their blood!

Learning the ropes

But not so fast as the first few months were tough, I couldn’t just pee or poo wherever and there were silly human rules like sit, stay, down, no, yes, make up your frickin’ human minds. When I wasn’t pestering my older brother Louie I got to play with a bunch of cool toys and do zoomies around my big yard.  And yes, I do have a humble streak as I’m so thankful to have hung around my big bro, even if for a short time, who showed me the ropes of being an independent and spirted Catahoula Leopard dog.

School????

The Parents, being parents, thought I needed to go to school, so off I went to Positive Pets while they went to Yellowstone, Tetons, Japan, wherever without their trusted Catahoula! My days were busy learning all kinds of silly human stuff from Devin and his amazing corral of trainers. I quickly figured out that most of what I learned was how to manipulate humans. Perfect!

I put my newfound and obviously exceptional acting skills to work on The Parents. They couldn’t ignore my forlorn look, those sad puppy dog eyes, my pathetic whimpering, etc. and took me to Idaho City to play like a Catahoula in the snow!

Fun for all

From then on, everyday was something new. From hiking in the foothills, to urban walks through downtown, to sniffing along the Boise River green belt, to my favorite pastime of mulching sticks, and most importantly seeing my girlfriends at Hyde Perk and Hydrant Dog Wash. I even got to join Clubhound, a 1.5-acre off leash country club for dogs!

Last year really seemed to fly by with a couple trips to the Oregon coast where I got to run, run, run on the beach and proudly display my Catahoula herding instincts to unsuspecting beach combers. The Parents now can’t live without me and take me to brew pubs, restaurants, wineries, political rallies, etc.

Looking Ahead. . .

. . . I’m not sure what The Parents have in store for 2026, but I’m ready to be their trusted Catahoulagan!
